The 134 (R) needle system is a standard needle for industrial high-speed sewing machines and can also be used for certain high-speed models of household sewing machines. SCHMETZ has developed an optimized version of the needle for this application: The 134 Universal Needle (134 U).
The SCHMETZ 134 Universal Needle combines the precision of the 134 (R) industrial needle with the versatility of the Universal Needle 130/705 H for the household sector. Its specially developed geometry is perfectly tailored to the requirements of high-speed models in the medium speed range. It allows for better, more precise loop formation and, at the same time, offers stability that is perfectly tailored to high-speed models of household sewing machines – striking the ideal balance between household and industrial machine needle.
The result? High quality seams and maximum reliability for demanding sewing projects.

Special features of the 134 Universal Needle in detail
The needle has a round shank with a shank diameter of 2 mm.
With a shank length of 11.5 mm, the shank is shorter than the shank of a standard 134 (R) industrial needle (13.5 mm long). This ensures that even thick materials can be sewn without problems, without the shank sinking into the material and leaving holes.
The optimized blade shape ensures high stability of the needle.
The thread groove is longer than on the standard 134 (R) industrial needle, which means less friction to the thread and, therefore, thread breakage is reduced – even in thicker materials.
The rounded edges of the thread groove also protect the sewing thread.
The smaller eye allows for more precise loop formation with thicker sewing threads and reduces skipped stitches, helping to guarantee optimum seam quality.
Point Shape
The 134 Universal Needle has a slightly rounded point. It is designed to penetrate materials gently and effortlessly without damaging them. This means that the 134 U can be used with countless common fabrics without any problems.
In addition, the slight rounding extends the service life of the point – compared to the acute standard R point common in industrial needles – as it reduces its susceptibility to wear and damage.
Application range
Due to its special geometry, the 134 Universal Needle can be used to sew thick fabrics, heavy materials and strong threads with ease: Bulky projects such as quilts and bags can be processed just as easily and flawlessly as hems on jeans.
