What you'll need
- Download sewing pattern
- SCHMETZ needles suitable for the fabric you choose. We chose the Universal Needle in size 80 for the birdie. (The SCHMETZ Needle ABC can help you to find the right needle.)
- 15 cm cotton / muslin for the body and wings
- 15 cm cotton / muslin for the beak
- 15 cm wadding (e.g. H630 by Freudenberg)
- 10 cm cording or ribbon
- Black embroidery thread
- Needle and thread
Cutting the pieces
For the body:
- 2 x 15 cm x 22 cm fabric for the body
- 2 x 15 cm x 7 cm fabric for the beak
- 1 x 15 cm x 27 cm wadding
For the wings:
- 2 x 15 cm x 25 cm fabric for the wings
- 1 x 15 cm x 25 cm wadding
Time to get sewing! Sewing instructions
SEWING THE WINGS
Place the two pieces of fabric for the wings right side together and then place these two layers of fabric onto the piece of wadding of the same size.

Pin these layers together. Transfer the outline of the wing template onto the fabric.

Sew along the line to stitch together all three layers of fabric/wadding, leaving a small gap on the straight top edge of the wing for turning.

Cut out the wings, leaving a 5 millimeter gap to the seam. Leave a 1 centimeter seam allowance at the opening. Cut into the gaps on the rounded edge of the wings so that the cuts almost reach the seam allowance.

Turn the wings so that they are right side out and close the opening with a ladder stitch.

Transfer the central line and lines on the end of the wings and top stitch with a straight stitch.

Take one piece of fabric for the beak and one piece of a fabric for the body and place them right side together so that the 15-centimeter-long edges overlap. Sew together the layers of fabric with a 1-centimeter seam allowance and press open the seam allowance.

Once you have assembled the two pieces of fabric for the bird's body, place them right side together so that the stitching lines meet exactly. Then place the two pieces of fabric onto the wadding. Pin all three layers together so that they don't slip.

Place the template for the bird's body onto the fabric so that the beak line is exactly in line with the stitching line. Transfer the outline of the bird's body onto the fabric.

Sew along the line using straight stitch and leave a gap on the stomach.

Cut out the bird's body, leaving a 5 millimeter gap to the seam. Leave a 1 centimeter seam allowance at the opening. Again, cut into the gap on the rounded edges of the bird's tail almost up to the seam allowance.

Turn the body so that it is right side out and close the opening with ladder stitch. While doing this, fold the piece of cord for the legs in the middle and place it between the layers of fabric for the opening so that the legs are secured at the same time.

Transfer the lines on the tail and top stitch with a straight stitch.

Secure the wings to the bird's body so that the central line on the wing meets the seam on the back. Use a ladder stitch for this.

Use black thread to embroider on the eyes.
